Prom. It is the final chapter in almost every high school movie, and the last time this year’s senior class will gather together for something that does not regard graduation. Every year, the junior class plans the entire prom as a gift to the seniors, keeping all details, including the theme, a secret.
After months of preparation by the hard work of the junior class board, the hollywood prom proved to be a success. The junior class spent hours on the Friday night before prom decorating and setting up the event, going so far as to create a “Hollywood” sign that replicated the one found in the hills of California.
“We got a lot of compliments from the seniors,” junior class board president, Liz Flusche said.
As students arrived at the Central Park Hall on the Fairgrounds, they entered the world of the red carpet, being announced and greeted as movie stars.
“The second I walked in, I instantly felt like a celebrity,” junior Amy Richardson said.
The senior boys and girls of the month even found their names as part of the Hollywood walk of fame, along with their photos lining the sides of the red carpet walkway.
Once everyone arrived and the room was filled with girls in long gowns and guys in tuxes, the sit-down dinner began, which consisted of salad, pastas, mashed potatoes, prime rib, turkey breast, and chocolate and vanilla mouses for dessert.
“The potatoes in the martini glasses were my favorite part of the meal,” senior Justin Parks said.
Soon it was time to break it down on the dance floor. “California Love” by Tupac began the dance. Overall, students said the music was better than it has been in past years, but they still missed a few of their favorite songs.
“I really wanted to get jiggy with it, but the music just didn’t allow it,” said senior Matt White.
At the end of the dance, all senior boys and girls of the month were called to the back of the room. As each month’s couple was announced, the anticipation for the crowning of Mr. and Miss Kelley grew. Finally, Sam Littlefield and Eleanor Humphrey received the honor.
“This senior class has so many outstanding students that I truly thought anyone could have won,” Littlefield said. “The feeling I have is indescribable, and to be named Mr. Kelley has meant the world to me.”
After the announcement the two hugged with excitement and shared the traditional Mr. and Miss Kelley dance.
“I’m pretty sure I was frozen in shock for a good 30 seconds, until Sam gave me a hug,” Humphrey said.
The evening concluded with Bishop Kelley’s favorite, “Don’t Stop Believin” by Journey.
