More than just a coach, Coach Culler knows where to find Oklahoma’s hidden jems. Along with knowing the best places to eat in Oklahoma, he also has other unexpected hobbies.
Coach Culler, otherwise known as William Jason Culler, shares his first name with all the men in his family, two cousins, two brothers and his father.
“We all go by our middle names,” Culler said.
Oklahoma native, Culler grew up in Enid, Oklahoma and attended Enid High School, then went on to play football for Oklahoma University (OU) and finished his degree at Oklahoma State University (OSU). In high school, Culler played football, basketball, baseball and track.
“You were kinda a nobody if you didn’t play sports… so I played just bout all of em,” Culler said.
In deciding to teach and coach, he chose Kelley, he says, for their good reputation of student athletes and good academics. He says loves to teach Oklahoma History and track is his favorite to coach.
Outside of coaching and teaching, Culler enjoys clothing, food and 80’s rap.
He calls himself a “clothes whore;” he loves gear.
Along with his fashion sense, he has keen sense for good food. His favorite places to eat are Texas Roadhouse and Genghis Grill. And a list of his top ten places to eat in Oklahoma looked like this: 1. Phat Phillys 2. Texas Roadhouse 3. Genghis Grill 4. Eischn “ Best darn chicken in the world, you can ask anybody,” Culler said. 5. Fuston’s Barbeque 6. Johnny’s Hamburgers (in Reno…not the chain) 7. Burdo’s 8. Pete’s Place 9. Coucou Burger 10. Wild Horse Mountain Barbeque .
“Ooh shoot! [ A perfect meal,] a buffet of all my favorite foods from the top ten favorite places to eat,” Culler said. “[None] of that asparagus crap!”
Culler finds good food anywhere. On a fishing trip with Coach Lance Parks, in Salina, Parks says they went to a convenience store and “Culler got a meat pie out of this like drawer thing, and I was like ‘dude, I would not have bought that’… but it was pretty good,” Parks said.
Jason Culler also enjoys 80’s rap. NWA, Eazy E, and Too Short are some of his favorites.
“Well, I can’t say [my favorite song] cuz there’s a curse word in it, but I also like Eazy Duz It and Life is Too Short,” Culler said.
Culler is taking classes to work on his masters and doctorate. And, some day become a superintendent of a school district somewhere in Oklahoma.
“I would like to be remembered as someone who cared about student athletes,” Culler said.
