This was an exceptional year at Bishop Kelley for student athletes planning to use their athletic talents in college. On February 3, National Signing Day, family, friends, faculty and coaches packed the commons to support 13 athletes signing to a wide range of colleges.
“I guarantee no school in this country signed as many kids to these prestigious schools from football to equestrian. The awesome turnout was a testament to what Bishop Kelley is all about,” football coach J.J. Tappana said.
For football, Tate Byers signed with Washington University; Ray Wolber, Drake University; Joe Dowdell, Dartmouth University; Mike Major, Princeton; Davis Walton, Northeastern A&M.
Tappana coached this group of players for the past 4 years and expressed his bitter-sweet feelings at the signing ceremony.
“The best part of my job is getting to watch these boys grow up not only as players but as young adults. This season was unforgettable and they will be greatly missed next year, but as one door closes another door opens,” Tappana said.
Kelly Bovaird signed with Kansas State University for equestrian.
“After signing, I feel confident about my future at Kansas State, and I was shocked at all the support from our community,” Bovaird said.
For softball, Katie Ellington signed with Northern Oklahoma College. For soccer, Kyle Craft signed with University of Notre Dame; Kristen Kelley, Oklahoma State University; Amy Petrikin, Oklahoma University; Alex Starret, Arkansas University; Sara Chalmers, Abilene Christian University; Stephanie Romero, Lipscomb University.
“For the past four years I have watched these girls grow tremendously in their skills and maturity. I look forward to watching their success next fall and hope, to make it to some games,” girls soccer coach Troy Tokarchik said.
