Drama is a very fun class in general, but it’s even better with Ms. Dana Hoagland. Ms. Dana Hoagland teaches drama, acting, and summer speech classes and is one of the most beloved teachers here.  Katie Youll (9) has benefitted greatly in other areas academically from being in Ms. Hoagland’s speech and drama classes.

“Her classes have really helped me a lot in the areas of memorizing things and I’ve become much better of a public speaker from being in her class,” Youll said.

Hoagland has always loved acting and performing for as long as she can remember. She was always drawn to teaching as well and her position is a perfect combination of the two. Hoagland sees a real application to her life through performing arts.

“Drama has really helped me connect with some people that I never would have dreamed I would’ve. You meet so many people and you can learn so many different things from them,” Hoagland said.

Many of Hoagland’s students greatly appreciate all that she does for the performing arts program and have benefitted in many ways through her teaching methods. Without her class, Ryland Grey (10), wouldn’t be nearly as comfortable talking in front of crowds.

“Her class has made much more comfortable in front of crowds and with public speaking in general. I am very grateful to have her as a teacher,” Gray said.

Hoagland’s favorite musical is West Side Story, the current one in production. It was the first musical she ever saw and it plays a major role in what inspired her to pursue her acting passion all through her life. Hoagland shows a real connection to the musical.

“When I first watched it, I realized ‘Wow, this is really what I want to do with the rest of my life. I am truly honored to be a part of it at Bishop Kelley,” Hoagland said.

She not only has an impact on her current students, but has a lasting effect. Cate Collier (9) took summer speech and first quarter Principles of Drama with Ms. Hoagland. Cate has seen a very lasting effect from both of her classes with Hoagland that she will carry with her for the rest of her life.

“She has really opened up my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities and opportunities for my future. I may not remember every lesson she taught me, but I will remember this: never be afraid to show the world who you are and to be yourself. Ms. Hoagland is a prime example of that,” Collier said.
