As Rachel Nightingale (9) handed a homeless child something as simple as a pair of socks and a water bottle she saw how easy it was to help someone in there hardest time of life. She did not see the dirt on the child’s face or the scrappy clothes, all she saw was the gratitude for something so simple.

The students can go to a Catholic Charity service, work at church, night light, etc. The school also offers opportunities at or with school. Students can also get extra opportunities as a part of student council. This year the school is using an app called Helper Helper to track and send out new opportunities for service to the students.

School President Rev. Gary Kastl explained that each Catholic school does service hours the way they want to do it. He also said that the staff is not required service hours but many choose to be a part of the monthly service day, and they also participate in service projects each year together as a staff.

“At BK we try to form the whole person,” Kastl said.

He believes that service hours helps reach that goal.

“Service is connected to our faith in that when we encounter the Lord we should have a desire to go out and be His hands and feet,” Kastl said.

Being a private school not only allows us to have plenty of service opportunities but also allows us to work as and example of Christ.

Director of Campus Ministries Jerri Berna, said that using the app Helper Helper not only made it easier on the school to track everyone’s hour but also to reach out to students for school opportunities. She also explained that we do not allow students’ hours to overlap over the years is because the school wants the student body to create a habit of doing good works. When a student does not complete all 25 hours by the end of the year, they lose access to BK Backpack, which stops them from seeing their grades, diploma, transcript and schedule.
