The multicolored spirit stick has been a part of Bishop Kelley for more than 30 years and has been a big part of the pep rallies. They history of the spirit stick starts when the cheerleader won a  competition in 1972. Gary Oberste started to hide it at the start of the year and for each pep rally.

“I started to hide it because I thought it would be a fun thing to do,” Oberste said. “I always use the hint ‘roses are red, violets are blue’ because of the colors on the spirit stick, and all of the clues make sense if you put them altogether. Many sophomores and freshmen come into my office each year begging for more hints on how to find it.”

The spirit stick is also used as a prize for the winning class for winning Spirit Week.

Zac Lewallen’s (10) class recently won the spirit stick this year

“I felt excited, kind of surprised,” Lewallen said, “I wasn’t sure that we would win it because the seniors usually win, and the freshmen were beating us.There was 50 people that fell because we were so excited.”

Mary Robertson (‘17), a recent graduate won the spirit stick in a landslide victory her sophomore and senior year.

“It was nice how my class came together to win it,” Robertson said. “We all ran into the middle of the court, one of my classmates slammed the stick into the ground acting as if it was a flag that he planted into the ground.”
