Speech and Debate team and coaches Erin Clark and Linda Shipley were in attendance at the Bixby High School speech and debate tournament on December 10. The Comets had multiple students debating in the tournament and won all the top places in Novice debate, which is an entry level debate classification.

Speech and Debate both are required courses; however, some students find enjoyment in speech and debate and want to do more than what is done in class. Debate coach Mrs. Shipley also gives students an incentive to go to a tournament, the incentive being that if you compete you automatically get a 100% on your final for her class. Mrs. Clark, on the other hand does not offer an incentive, thus proving if a student is there for speech they must really like it.

The speech and debate team boarded a bus after 2nd block, went to Memorial Drive, had lunch, and then onto the tournament that went all the way to 9:30pm. Upon arrival the students were directed into the Bixby High School auditorium and were held there until the schedules were given. The first rounds began around 3pm and that was just  the beginning of the dominance. The team had a positive record in the Novice or amateur class, a positive record in the 5A or intermediate class, and a positive record in the honors class. Coaches Linda Shipley and Erin Clark stayed to count the ballots while the participants waited in the cafeteria. The young students’ success showed serious potential.

“I’m always proud and excited when the young debaters–freshman and sophomores–do well at tournaments.  It points to a bright, successful future for our competitive speech and debate team,” Shipley, said.

The speech team showed it’s skill at Bixby as well. The speech team had a positive record at the tournament. After the speech team’s success, Clark was very happy with the result. A third place PFD team consisting of Caroline Lindsay and her partner did so well on Friday night that they did not come back Saturday and still placed 3rd. Lindsay and her partner had a tag team affect during the tournament, meaning each of them filled the others weakness. Another Novice debate team consisting of Cameron Bednar (9) and Sadie Gawey (9) placed 4th at the tournament. Experiencing a tournament can often lead to a career of Speech and Debate.

“I will continue with my debate career at BK partially because of my experience at the tournament,” Bednar said.

When returning to debate or speech class, students who placed in the top 3 received their medals. The Comets definitely left the tournament feeling great about their experience.
