Heart racing, palms sweating, legs twitching in the seat impatiently waiting. The teacher is teaching a lesson, but it passes right through your head. These are some of the characteristics of a candidate waiting for the election results. There have been many who have gone through this process in hopes to be part of the group of leaders for the upcoming school year.

Mr. Franz, the principal of the school, emphasizes how important great leaders are. He also believes that with the right timing, just about anyone can run for office.

“You need a hard work ethic. But I should be able to walk into a room, close my eyes, and point. Every single student I pointed to should be able to become an officer,” Franz said.

As spring approaches, many candidates are getting ready for their campaign. One of these candidates is Sam Alaback (11). Alaback is heavily involved with the school and is in many extracurricular activities, but one of his biggest goals is to be the next student council president.

“I would be a great leader for this school because of my passion for Bishop Kelley and how much I love the student body,” Alaback said. “I’ve been preparing since June of last year. Even just getting to know everyone at school whether they be underclassmen or upperclassmen helps so much.”

Current president, Zack Lissau (12), has learned many things during his time as president for the 2018-2019 school year. He has set a great example for the student body and has grown as a person immensely because of this experience. He has learned many things along his journey and what it means to be a good leader.

“I learned more about myself and what it takes to be a leader. I learned that as a leader you have to have a vision. With that vision, you have to collaborate with others to get that vision figured out, and then you have to strategically get that vision accomplished. You have to be a visionary, collaborate, and a strategic collaborator,” Lissau said. “Being a leader you are tasked with leading others, and the office of President has allowed me to do that in so many ways.”

Leadership plays a very important role when it comes to building a strong foundation. Finding good leaders and having the will and drive to become a good one is very essential. The upcoming officer elections will be hectic and nerve wracking for those who are running, but it will ultimately show the best in the candidates and will teach them many life lessons along the way.
