Lucy Arp (9) is always smiling throughout the day. She came in on the first day of school nervous, but that feeling faded quickly as she now feels part of a community. “My first year has been going great and I am so excited for all the memories I will continue to make over the next couple of years,” Arp said.

Stepping out of the car, Lucy Arp (9) has feelings of excitement and nervousness, she takes some of her first steps on the grounds where she will be spending most of her time for the next four years. She is welcomed by an abundance of upperclassmen wearing shirts as bright as tennis balls, holding signs, and directing her towards the other freshman. She looks around for familiar faces realizing that there are a lot of people she does not know. This is what she was experiencing on her first day of Link Crew.

While this was only one freshman experience on the first day of link crew, many other freshmen can agree they were feeling the same way. Leah Ames (9) looks back on her first day of link crew with some of the same emotions.

“I was nervous coming into it, but also excited to meet to new people and it helped that I had my sister in link crew,” Ames said.

The transition into high school from middle school can be very difficult for some students, so faculty with the help of upperclassmen, want to make that transition as easy as possible with link crew. School principal Jim Franz, sees link crew as something different we do, that other schools do not do.

“It is an unusual effort that Bishop Kelley does that a similar school does not do,” Franz said.

While at link crew, freshmen are put with other freshmen they may not know, along with 3 link crew leaders, who are upperclassmen. The freshmen play games to get to know each other, while the link crew leaders begin to form a bond with them. Lucy Arp (9) recalls playing the games with her link crew group.

“Playing the games was my favorite part because it pushes you to get out of your comfort zone and meet new people,” Arp said.

Life as a freshman can be very hard and link crew is just one of the many things that the school does to try and make their year as fun as possible.
