Triere Nickel (10) drove to school like any other day, except that she was driving a loaner car. She went to her classes like usual, until the end of the day when she was greeted by a parking permit slip on her car. The slip told her she needs to get a permit or she may be towed. She was frustrated because she was driving a car that wasn’t hers and was confused about the rules for this situation.

“Well I was frustrated because I was driving a loaner car and I didn’t understand why I had to get a whole new permit for a car that wasn’t even mine,” Nickel said.

Nickel went to the office after she got the slip and said they were very understanding.

Students pay $25 for a parking permit. This permit will last the student all school year. Each grade has a different color so having an old one will not work. Many students don’t know why we have them and many get frustrated when they get in trouble for not having them. If you don’t have one you will get a slip on your car saying you need one or your car may be towed.

Parent Nora Percy thinks the permits are not necessary. She has had two kids go through the school and one there now, Eleanor Percy (10).

“I think it’s completely ridiculous. We already pay tuition; why should we have to pay to park there? It just doesn’t make any sense,” Percy said.

Dean of Students Jeff Pratt explains why we have them and why they are necessary.

“Parking permits are a maintenance fee as far as the cost goes. We average about $10,000 a year in repair, repainting and fixing holes. The other reason is we want to know who is on campus, so if I have vehicles on campus that I can’t identify that’s a safety hazard,” Pratt said.

Pratt goes on to say that the slips do say you will be towed if you don’t get a permit, but that is the last resort.

Parking permits are a must if you are a student at the school. Parking permits are overall for safety and to keep the parking lot in good condition. Some people think that they are not necessary, others know the use for them and understand why we need them.
