The championship drive is a rebuilding project ongoing at school. It is a three phase project. It is a completely fund raised project started five years ago. The drive has already made it to phase three. The first phase was redoing the visitor’s locker room, and the second phase was redoing the field house. That gave athletes new locker rooms and a new weight room. The third phase is to completely redo the stands and the stadium. The stands would have a greater capacity including a much better and bigger press box. New bathrooms and possibly a student store down at the field are also coming. There are many improvements and projects that the school could be doing so why was this the next project?

“We never had our own stadium until 1996. We played all of our games at somewhere else so then we built the stadium we have now…  so we started 5 years ago trying to update locker rooms weight rooms,” Father O’Brien said.

Talking about other projects, Father O’Brien has a list of regrets or things he wishes would have been accomplished by the end of his tenure.

“First on my list is the PC building. I really thought when i got started that definitely by year nine we would have the PC redone, and we don’t, and we didn’t get it done. Number two on my list was I really thought taking the inspiration from Marquette has had special needs students that BK has not been able to accommodate. Number three was like a school song like when after a game win or lose we come together join arms and we sing our school song,”O’Brien said.

All of those would be great new projects after we finish the Championship Drive. We have 1.3 million dollars currently to finish the final phase which will in total cost 6 million dollars. If they reach their projections they should start construction at the end of the 2018 football season and have it ready by the 2019 season.

This project has already helped and benefited so many athletes here at BK and will continue to. Cori Lewis (10) is a football and basketball player and runs track. Cori is hopeful he will get to see the changes to the field house and field by his senior year.

“It would make playing more fun and interesting and hopefully bring in a bigger crowd,” Lewis (10) said.

Linda Garrett is the freshman girls basketball and girls golf coach. Coach Garrett has been here through many other developments in the school like the new basketball floor, which always have a positive outcome.

“Any updates made to the school are going to help draw people to the school,” Garrett said.

All of the fundraising efforts always go to a great cause. The school will always be growing and getting better. Seeing the Championship Drive getting finished is just the first of the improvements to come.
