The Bishop Kelley String Ensemble Played a 20 minute set Monday night while people came in for the NHS Assembly that evening. They played while family and friends took a seat in the bleachers, and for the entrance of the honor students.

The string ensemble started off with an ensemble favorite, “The Russians Sailor’s Dance” Which is a fast upbeat piece As the students walked in, the ensemble played the famous “Canon in D” Playing for events such as the Honors assembly gives the ensemble a chance to gain more members and allow others to watch an orchestra play.

Anna Purvis is a new addition to the string ensemble this year. She is classically trained for opera singing, and a gifted piano player. She has only been playing the Violin for nine months.

“I think it has been a really good experience to work with other people and hear the music in a full setting rather than just hearing a single part and it being such a small intimate group,” Purvis said. “My favorite thing about the ensemble is the variety of musical instruments.”

The ensemble is growing larger in size, and variety of instruments. The string ensemble began with two cellos and four violins. There are now five violins, four cellos, a viola, and a harp. The teacher, Karen Harmon has been teaching the string ensemble for five years and is planning to continue teaching for years ahead.

“The first year of string ensemble I had 6 in my class, and now there are 11. The students play better and better each year and are a total joy to teach,” Harmon said.

With each year the ensemble has grown by a few members and is hoping to continue to grow and acquire new instruments and players.

The ensemble plays a large variety of music, ranging from classical Vivaldi pieces, to more contemporary music such as “Secrets” by OneRepublic and “Skyfall” from James Bond. The ensemble often plays soundtracks from popular movies. The ensemble is currently working on the soundtrack of “Pirates of the Caribbean” and a shortened version of the soundtrack from Star Wars.  According to most of the members, the Russian Sailor’s Dance is overall an ensemble favorite.

“It is a lot of repetition, but it does it in a way that is is still provoking interest using speed to make it grow and change into different sections,” Purvis said. “It is just so much fun to play.”

The ensemble plays at many different events each year. The ensemble is seen playing for all school mass one or two times during the second quarter. The ensemble annually plays for a mass at St. Bernards Catholic church.

The ensemble also has a lot of holiday spirit! Each year after Thanksgiving, the ensemble plays for many events outside of the Bishop Kelley community, being paid mostly in food. Every year the ensemble plays holiday music for a fundraiser for the Saint Michaels Catholic Radio Station. The ensemble also gets to play for the Bishop Kelley Christmas Concert each year, which will be held on the 13th of December this year!

The ensemble provides a great outlet for musicians to share their talent with the community, and provides the community beautiful music.
