Varsity Academic Bowl Leader Ms. Bendel’s classroom walls are becoming cramped with trophies and plaques from past victories of the Academic Bowl team. Besides clearing wall-space, Academic Bowl has to prepare for the National Competition in other ways as well.

After surpassing other teams throughout the district, Oklahoma, and even the region, the Varsity Academic Bowl team has been summoned to the National Tournament in New Orleans. For months, the Varsity Academic Bowl team, consisting of Seniors Garret Alexander, Turner Snapp, and Angela Brown, Juniors Bob Siegfried and Edward Lietchti, and Freshman Aiden Raine, has been practicing.

“We have three mandatory practices a week,” Liechti said. ”Usually it’s before school on Wednesday and then two other times throughout the week depending on people’s schedules.”

One team leader, Angela Brown, said that there is more to practicing than just knowing information.

“We are learning to work better as a team, figuring out the strength and weaknesses.” Brown said.

While practicing for the competition and working on teamwork skills seem like some of the most important pieces of the preparations, there is yet another piece that must be held up above all of them.

The largest challenge to winning the competition is getting there in the first place. Fundraising is highly necessary for the team to get to their destination. They only have a few major fundraising opportunities, all of them headed by the Ms Bendel.

“We are going to be doing an escape room on May 12th, which we will start publicizing pretty soon,” Bendel said.

It is not just up to the Varsity team to gather these funds. Novice and Junior Varsity also help to create ideas for funding. Junior Varsity member Caroline Godfrey (11) is one of these people.

“I am helping plan the escape rooms,” Godfrey said. ”We are bringing back some rooms from our past years.”

In order for Academic Bowl to succeed in the tournament, much must be done. It seems like too much work for some. The Academic Bowl team, however, is up to the challenge.
