The time of giving and receiving is here once again and so are the plans for this year’s auction. This is the 39th annual auction to raise money for school development.

This year’s proceeds anticipate anywhere from $250,000 to $280,000  and will go to renovate classroom technology, tuition assistance, and much-needed improvements to the theater program. Spearheading the 2019 Auction is Yadi Boykin. She is the mother of BK students Miracle (12) and Treasure (10) and is the new face of the Auction Committee. Her job is to organize the auction from start to finish.

She begins with the task of selecting individuals to chair the auction. This year’s co-chairs are Teresa Gawey and Kim Eshleman. Their job is to assist Mrs. Boykin by recruiting committee members and oversee the budget of the auction. The next step is to solicit donations from the Bishop Kelley community. This may include any number of items, gift certificates, events, services or cash. The next item on the agenda is decorations.

“We have been out looking and shopping and securing different designs, lighting, a band, DJ, all those kind of things like what color plates or types of cups or what’s going to be at the bar,” Mrs. Boykin said.

While Mrs. Boykin is hammering out the small details, school president Fr. Gary Kastl and the executive team prefer to focus on the big picture. It is up to them to determine what the auction money is used for and every year a significant portion is allocated for tuition assistance.

“The cost to come to Bishop Kelley is not going to get cheaper. It’s only going to continue to get more expensive. Anyone who wants to come here and have a Catholic education should have a right to come here and have a Catholic education. So we have to do a lot of work to continue to raise money to make sure that there is money to go out to those students and their families.” Kastl said.

Bishop Kelley gives out over $900,000 a year in tuition assistance to 20% of the students. That means 1 in 5 students at BK directly benefit from the auction proceeds.

In addition to tuition assistance, the theater program is getting a huge boost from this year’s auction. Ms. Dana Hoagland, head of the theater department, is excited about the long-overdue upgrades.

”There is sound equipment that still needs to be fixed and replaced, there’s nothing that’s going to keep us from doing a show but things that will really take it to the next level,” Hoagland said.

This year’s auction will take place on April 27 and feature a Cuban oasis in the heart of green country.
