The Flu: it can start as dismissive as a cold and evolve into something as serious as death. Many students are absent every year because of this infamous illness and school staff is trying to figure out how to prevent it.

Principal Jim Franz also had something to say on Flu Virus importance and prevention. This week, staff started education by receiving an email every day regarding flu education. They also track absences every day and track how many are related to the flu virus and provide free hand sanitizers as well as the resources teachers need to sanitize classrooms.

School Nurse Tierney Dower also has things she is doing to prevent a large flu outbreak. She is encouraging everyone to get a flu shot, providing classrooms with needed resources to sanitize classrooms, stay home when they’re sick, and asking everyone to practice coughing and sneezing into an elbow. She also said the CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older to get a flu shot. It potentially  provides stability for not getting it, and it may make getting the flu not as serious. Because the strain of the flu changes year to year, the experts estimate what viruses will be making people sick and sometimes they miss it and sometimes they hit the mark.

Personal stories about the flu vary from student to student. On one hand, Jake Rawlings (9) did not get the flu vaccine and he still got the flu this year. On the other hand, Meredith Henry (9) got the flu vaccine and the flu last year. Rawlings thinks the vaccine is important to either prevent the flu altogether or it can make having it not last so long or be not as serious. Meredith however thinks that the vaccine is not important and you can get the flu either way.
