Lacrosse is a sport that has been getting a lot of attention, especially when it comes to high school sports. But the question remains; why is lacrosse not an official sport in Oklahoma, and will it ever be? Here, lacrosse is offered as a club, and lots of participants have shown a massive interest, but it’s still not a sanctioned sport. And the reason behind that is because lacrosse isn’t regulated by the OSSAA, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association. Lance Parks, the athletic director, works with the OSSAA to see what sport activities are allowed at school.

“Now as far as sanctioning the sport in the state of Oklahoma, I don’t really see that happening in the future,” Parks said.

Participation is also a big issue that stands in the way of lacrosse becoming a “real” sport. In the Tulsa area, participation is high, but statewide, or even nationwide, there are actually not that many players compared to sports like baseball, basketball, or football. Andrew Cooper (9) has played lacrosse for 3 years, and absolutely loves the sport.

“I actually got into lacrosse because a lot of my friends wanted me to play with them and I have a cousin who plays, so that’s what got me into playing,” Cooper said.”It surprises me that people don’t want to play, because lacrosse is actually pretty easy to pick up and have a lot of fun.”

Nick Landreville (9) is also a lacrosse player, who also has a high interest in the game.

“Lacrosse is actually a really inclusive sport because everyone’s talents are really utilized depending on their ‘job’ on the team,” Landreville said.

That’s one of the concerns high school students have when trying a sport; they’re worried that they won’t make the team, and that thought process is what’s holding lacrosse back.
