New friends, high school, and new experiences are just three things Link Crew helps with to make Freshman’s transition to high school smoother.

To be chosen for Link Crew, rising Juniors and Seniors go through a tough vetting process, where they have to write three essays, answer questions on a video, and get teacher recommendations.

Mrs. Gabel was a student here and participated in Link Crew.  Now she helps run Link Crew and loves it.

“It is a tradition that has gone on since I was here, and it is neat to see the enthusiasm from when I was here still continue on with the students today,” Gabel said.

Once the 150 applicants are chosen, the freshman class is divided into groups of seven or eight freshman.  Each group has three leaders that teach them about the school and answer questions the freshmen may have. The fun part of Link Crew is all the icebreaker games the leaders play with the freshmen, as well as the Frosh Olympics which is even more games.

KaraGrace Mirando (12) has been a Link Crew leader both her junior and senior year.  She is passionate about Link Crew.

“Getting to be able to form relationships with all the new freshman and really getting to know them is nice,” Mirando said.  “I also loved having fun and being that big sister to them.”

The second day of Link Crew, the freshmen will get to go to all their classes to see where they are.  Also they learn about their Chromebooks and how to log their service hours.

The two days of Link Crew are in place to help the freshmen make friends and to give them knowledge about the school and their schedules before school starts.

Like Mrs. Gabel, Mr. Oberste, Dean of Student Activities, is an Alum and now runs the Link Crew program alongside Mrs. Gabel.  He loves to be a part of helping the freshen have a smoother transition.

“Link Crew provides a very smooth transition for freshmen.  It enables upperclassman to pass on their freshman experiences to underclassman,” Oberste said.  “Also the upperclassman get to be good positive role models and mentors.”

Link Crew provides the freshmen with a chance to make new friends, gain knowledge about the school before school starts, and make memories all the kids will have for a lifetime.
