Founded in 735 BC and home of the Pope, Rome attracts millions of people each year to see its famous art and architecture. Attracting around 4.2 million tourists a year and housing many famous museums was enough for 13 students who jumped at the opportunity to travel to Rome. Along with Fr. Gary Kastl and Coach Jerri Berna those 13 students arrived in Rome, Italy on March 15th.

Their journey started on Thursday March 14th. Their first flight departed from the Tulsa airport to Georgia. They had a long layover in Georgia and to kill time they went to The Human Rights Museum. This was the first museum of many that they would see.  Finally, after 8 hours of waiting, they boarded the airplane to go to their final destination.

Junior Lauren Miles (11) reminisces on what she was feeling as the airplane took flight towards Rome. This was her first time going out of the country.

“ I was feeling anxious, but also very eager to land and start my pilgrimage in Rome,” Miles said.

While in Rome, they were able to see many attractions that allowed them to grow in their faith as well as experience the different culture of Rome. They visited St. Peter’s Basilica, the Trevi Fountain, the Basilica of San Clemente, and many more. Each place they visited told a different story along with a new experience for the students. Some places were burial grounds for saints, while others housed relics of Jesus Christ.

School president Fr. Gary Kastl, looks back on this trip, although one of many, as a new experience. This one, however, was his first time going with teenagers.

“ Experiencing Rome through someone’s eyes who has not been there before and watching their wander and awe is always inspiring to me,” Kastl said.

Also, along their trip they were able to go see Pope Francis. Their day began at 5 in the morning to travel to see the Pope and receive his papal blessing from him and to get anything else blessed.

Nicole Holdgrafer (11) recalls seeing Pope Francis, as an experience she will never forget.

“ It was very eye opening and made everything in my faith feel so real and concrete,” Holdgrafer said.

The students returned to the states on March 22 after a long trip. They came back to the States with many new memories, new experiences, and a fondness for the city of Rome.
