Although Academic Bowl may sound like some sort of cereal it certainly is not one. Academic Bowl in truth is a quiz-based competition that tests players on a wide variety of academic subjects. The game is played with a lockout buzzer system between at least two teams who compete to answer the question that is asked as quickly as possible while getting it correct.

Bishop Kelley started the Academic Bowl club to get in on this competitive game. Medea Bendel, the sponsor of this club, says that Academic Bowl is special to Bishop Kelley because of the people that attend it.

“It’s just the community we build, these are really intelligent individuals who want to have fun with their intelligence,” Bendel said.

The team has done very well in years past winning the state title 7 of the past 8 years. The team has won the state title for the past 6 years without a hitch. Bendel comments of how the streak puts pressure on the team to continue winning.

“It’s kind of scary almost because you start to set this precedent of success and it’s a lot of pressure that we have put on ourselves,” Bendel said.

Sadly, not all people involved in the team for Academic Bowl can go to the competitions, but there is a sense of pride embedded in the team no matter if you were at the competition or if you were not able to make it. Jacob Visconti (9) loves to be on the team even though he could not go to the competition.

“I love being part of the team because I’m proud of how we are able to compete and when someone asks if I am on the team there is a sense of pride I get from being able to say ‘yes’,” Visconti said.

This all ties into how the school is a family oriented place. no matter where you look you will see a family. All of the teams and groups of the school are in such a tightly knit family the school may never be separated.
