There will be a new coach on the scene this year for boys soccer. As Coach Saunders steps down, a new assistant coach will take his place. But will the new coach have what it takes?

As  boys soccer is looking for a 4th straight state championship, assistant coach Coach Saunders is stepping down from being an assistant coach and taking a managerial role. He was a coach for 4 years and was a part of 3 state championships. His role was mainly coaching JV, but he was an assistant for Varsity. He had many different roles. Coach Saunders gave some advice to whoever the new soccer coach may be.

“Support Phil, you always want to support your head coach. I always want to try to bring the best out of every single player. If Phil says go and take the freshman I try and do that. If Phil says go work with the attackers I work with that. So always be there to support your head coach,” Saunders said.

Not only was Coach Saunders always helping around with everything, but it seemed as though he was well liked by the team. Rory VanTrease (10) will miss Coach Saunders this season.

“I loved playing for Coach Saunders last year, he is a fun guy to have around and a good coach,” VanTrease said.

This role is not only going to be about soccer for the new coach, but also connecting and getting to know his players as Coach Saunders did. So obviously this will not be easy shoes to fill. Head Coach Phil Barkley had some ideas of what he is looking for and wants from his new assistant coach.

“I would like the new assistant to be able to help out with a little of everything, but I would especially like him to get the players on JV ready for Varsity. I would also like them to make sure players are staying out of trouble, and then also give input on Varsity matters,” Barkley said.

With practice just starting up, the team is still awaiting the name of the new assistant coach. So will the new coach be able to live up to the expectations and hopes of the team? Only time will tell.
