For decades, Bishop Kelley students have only been able to wear starchy, button down shirts to school. Years ago, BK ditched the blazers so that students would be comfortable; now students are asking, “Why not add shirts that make the students feel cozy too?”

It’s a known fact that many students aren’t fond of uniforms. The skirts and the pants are uncomfortable, but they aren’t nearly as bad as the shirts. The oxford shirts feel rough, stiff, and bulky according to the majority, if not all, of the student body.

One of the worst feelings is walking outside in the Oklahoma heat just to become drenched in sweat while having the starchy button downs rub across your back and arms. The heat seems to attract to these garments.

Another con to button down shirts is their easy to wrinkle nature. It seems like any time the shirts bend, a crease appears and it never comes out.

An easy fix to this problem is to add polo style shirts to the uniform selection. Currently seniors can wear red polos, but they are the only ones allowed to wear them. The shirts are viewed as a privilege since underclassmen cannot wear them. This is understandable, but a solution would be to allow  everyone to wear black and white BK polos while only letting the seniors wear red. This lets the underclassmen wear comfy shirts, but still gives the seniors the advantage of having red ones. If the school is worried about everyone looking “sloppy” on special days, like Mass for example, it could be mandatory on those days to wear the button downs.

Overall, the shirts available to the underclassmen are sub par and uncomfortable. However, adding the polo shirt style to the collection of uniforms would relieve this discomfort. The school days would be slightly more enjoyable because no one would be forced to wear a bulky, starchy button down.
