When is the last time you saw something healthy in a vending machine? Out of the 6 vending machines here at school, none of them offer anything even remotely healthy besides water. The school needs to stock vending machines with healthy options like fruit, pretzels, granola bars, peanuts, and popcorn. While chips, candy, donuts, and sugary drinks are all very appealing to the students here, but what is it doing to their mental and physical health?

Research studies on the topic have shown that processed foods have increased rates in child obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other awful diseases. It has also been proven that the more junk food somebody eats, the less likely they will be to get healthy, daily nutrients. By eating too much junk food, you risk high blood sugar and cholesterol. Bad eating habits can also make students less attentive in class. Eating unhealthy can also damage a student’s mental health. Some studies say that changing to a healthier diet can possibly cure depression, anxiety, and stress. Researches have also been advocating that unhealthy foods can have a negative effect on memory.

Moreover, it is most likely possible to change some of the unhealthy snacks with healthier ones. For example, chips could be switched for popcorn, pretzels, or sunflower seeds. Cookies could be replaced with granola bars, muffins and honey buns for peanuts or trail mix. Packages of fruit can replace candy and tea, milk, and/or more juices.
