A controversial topic across our school is the fact that girls are allowed to wear only white socks. However, boys are allowed to wear whatever socks they want during school.

Stated in our schools dress code, rule number five, states: “ Socks must be white when wearing skirts.” This rule implies that girls can wear different color socks if they are wearing pants, but they’re not allowed to in a skirt. However, many female students prefer skirts over khaki pants on a daily basis. Besides not wanting to wear pants, many girls don’t even own them and it’s not practical to go out and buy a pair of pants then never wear them.

The wearing of white socks is not a rule in many other high schools in Tulsa, notably schools like Cascia Hall, Holland Hall, Metro Christian, Edison, and Booker T. Washington. In most of those schools, girls and boys alike are allowed to wear either whatever socks they want or neutral colored socks. Although the concern about the socks isn’t nearly the schools biggest problem, it’s not fair towards girls in a school environment. Girls only allowed to wear white socks with skirts is unnecessary and even borderline sexist. Overall this rule is inessential at our school.
