According to ACLU, students being forced to wear uniforms restricts freedom of expression which commonly leads to habitual depression starting at a young age.

Students have a mandatory dress code with khakis and a button up for boys (skirts for girls). Considering the nearly inevitable backlash it has in the future lives of students, the school should allow free dress to all students once a week.

Outside of the school 21% of public schools are also beginning to require uniforms that aren’t as strict, such as Booker T. Washington, but the concept is the same. While this appears to promote a sense of union among students, it does have long term effects. In a society with growing acceptance for people who don’t fit the average criterion for what is “normal” the subtle implications of conformity are extremely harmful in terms of forward progression.

To put it simply, we live in a world where new ideas and breaking the mold are required to innovate and the last thing students need in their most developmental phase is to be taught how to be similar to everyone else.
