For many students, lunchtime isn’t always carefree and easy.  While in line to buy school lunch, it may be hard to find a good vegan option.  While the salad bar is available, it is not a very filling lunch considering that the school day is seven hours long and requires a lot of energy.

Lily Shrier (10), a vegan student at Bishop Kelley who regularly packs her lunch, states why she doesn’t like buying lunch at school.

“I pack my lunch because the vegan food at school is expensive and for what you get it is not really worth it,” Shrier said.

While packing a lunch is always a great option, the school should be aware that it may not always be a constant option.  Vegan students who forget their lunch at home, or don’t have time to pack one, don’t find many alternate options.

Madalene Gomez (10), a newly vegetarian student, gives us insight on her repeated encounters with limited lunch options.

“I don’t always have time to pack my lunch and if I don’t, I normally will just go the whole day without eating because I’m really given much of a choice,” Gomez said.

While some may argue that vegan options are available, many of them are not filling, and quite nutrient dense.  Sarah Synar (10) likes to bring foods that sustain her.

“Whenever I bring my food from home I feel like I eat better because I can bring foods that fill me up,” Sarah Synar (10) said.

Sometimes, wanting different lunches isn’t always just a preference.  Eating in a way that isn’t normal for your body can affect the rest of your day.  Allie Major (10) eats many plant-based meals at home.

“When I eat at school my stomach always hurts,” Major (10) said.

It is no news that nutrition is a large determining factor in a student’s performance during the school day. Students who regularly eat healthy meals are more attentive and less tired.  Everyone should be able to go to school and not worry about having something to eat. Some school lunches are less popular than others, and not many people purchase them. However, if complete vegan-friendly meals replaced the less popular and less purchased lunches, more people would be pleased!  The student’s needs are a priority at school, and vegan lunch options can meet those of many students.
