Many students start getting an idea of what they want to do after high school and college during or after freshman year, yet they are still forced to take classes that have nothing to do with those aspirations. The school should allow students to pick their majors during high school.

Many students are fond of this idea due to the fact that it would remove the requirements for them to take classes that they do not like or do not want to do. They could take classes that they are interested in and could help them build a career in the subject. This could eliminate many of the biggest problems in school today. Students would pay more attention in class due to their interest in the subject. This could also reduce cheating on homework and tests because students would want to learn the material in order to have the information with them during and after college. Students could stop complaining about never having to use the information they use in class in the real world because they will know that they chose this and they will have to use this later on in life. Students would graduate high school with a greater knowledge of the subject matter they’ll study in college because they studied it in high school. Which in turn will better prepare students for college and give them more confidence in their career choice once they leave high school.

The system for a student choosing their major could work just like how students pick classes currently. However, instead of students picking a variety of classes and stressing over how hard they will be or how interesting they will be they could simply look at the major options and see the classes that come with that option. There could be a variety of different choices with classes that will help the student build a future in the subject of their choosing. Students could pick classes based on what they would enjoy doing instead of the school making them take classes they do not want to take and limiting their ability to thrive. Students would benefit greatly from knowing that they will enjoy the classes that they will take instead of dreading a class that they were forced to take due to graduation requirements or lack of availability.

In conclusion, students picking their major could greatly benefit themselves and the school in a variety of ways. Including: students paying more attention in class, fewer students cheating on homework, tests, etc., and student’s overall happiness around school improving. The system of students picking their major in high school could benefit them better for college and for life.
