Do teachers assign too much homework, and should it be optional? This is a very controversial question and sparks some very heated debates.

Homework is good for students to get extra practice on what they are learning in school. But is homework getting out of hand?

A poll taken by high school teachers stated that on an average weeknight, teachers assigned their students three and a half hours of homework. This is way too much. Homework causes stress, lack of sleep, and can result in lower grades. Especially for students with extracurricular activities.

For example, a student finishes school at 3:00 p.m. and has soccer practice from 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m., and gets home at 6:30 p.m. and they finish up dinner at about 7:15 p.m. After dinner, the student goes upstairs and does three and a half hours of homework. This puts them at 10:45 p.m., now the student can finally take a shower, brush their teeth etc. Say that this takes him/ her 45 min. It is now 11:30 p.m.and the student is finally going to bed, just to wake up at 6:30 the next morning and do it all over again. This only gives the student about 7 hours of sleep. which is 1-2 hours less than the healthy amount of sleep a high school student needs. This also only gives the student 45 minutes of family time which is while they are eating dinner.

Now with all of that said, homework does benefit students, but 3.5 hours of it, come on that’s just ridiculous.

A 9th grade Latin teacher at BK that assigned optional homework every night. So you could do it for extra practice and you would get a 10/10 completion grade on it, but if you didn’t do complete it, it would go in the grade book as an X and did not affect your grade. This is how teachers should assign their homework because students can still practice their work outside of class but if they have a lot going on outside of school and don’t have enough time to get their homework done it won’t negatively affect their grade.
