Mornings are students’ least favorite time of day. Every day they wake up tired, no matter how much sleep they get. Looking in the mirror they see bags under their eyes even though they may have slept close to seven hours. They endure early morning trudges throughout the house doing various tasks getting ready for the day and trying to get more energy, every day wishing for that one extra hour of sleep.

School should start at 9am. Over the years, there have been many discussions in education, with policymakers taking part, about school start times and the importance of students getting enough sleep. According to the Oxford University Sleep Study a teenager’s brain typically begins to fully function two hours later than adults. Neuroscientists say that they are biologically predisposed to go to sleep around midnight and not fully feel awake and engaged until between 9am and 10am. Having this late start every day will boost students energy, making them more awake.

There are many reasons why the school should switch to a full time late start rather than only on Wednesdays.

A school that recently changed from a normal start to a late start reported fewer disciplinary incidents in the lunchroom and hallways, and students reported less depression and feelings of greater efficacy. Over 92% of the parents said their kids were easier to live with.

So why do people think we need to start school so early? This seems like a great idea?

Many people in charge think that this would cause confusion and would be costly. They think it would disrupt the current way things work. On the contrary,  many people agree with this thought, and studies have shown it is a good course of action for all schools. Here at Bishop Kelley, people should take a stand and get some sleep.
