Will Thomas (11) laces up his shoes for his first practice with a new, but familiar face as the coach. He feels a sense of excitement, but also a bit of nerves, just wondering how the season will play out and what kind of new asset the new coach will bring to the team. The community has been ecstatic with the news that there has been a new coach hired to lead the boy’s varsity basketball team this year. This season former assistant coach, Coach Dee, will be taking the position of head coach, and many more to come.

Gym teacher and longtime assistant, Coach Dee plans to take on the season in his own way.

“I’ve been an assistant coach for 29 years here at Bishop Kelley, and it is exciting for me to implement my offense and defense strategies,” Dee said.

Since Dee has been appointed to this position, he has gained tremendous support for not only the parents and faculty but also from the varsity boys basketball team.

Luke Nagode (11), a basketball player who has been coached by different coaches through his years here, talks about what the team thinks about Dee taking over the lead of the team.

“I think Coach Dee is doing great, and that he really has the support of the team,” Nagode said.

Not only is the team excited for the season with Dee, but other members of the faculty are also just as happy to see him take the role in showing others his talent of coaching.

Assistant athletic director and head girls basketball coach, Coach Allison looks forward to Coach Dee’s personal style of leadership.

“Coach Dee has been such a great part of Bishop Kelley over the years and I’m really excited to see him put his stamp on the program,” Allison said.

After practice, Will Thomas (11) unlaces those same shoes, a little sweatier than before and reflects on his new coach.

“Coach Dee is already helping the program and the team is excited for all he will continue to do,” Thomas said.

With all that being said, the community is excited to see Dee coaching in a different light this year and to see how he will continue to improve the program.
