Swimmers walk out and get ready to swim the 200 freestyle. The buzzer goes off, and the swimmers dive in. Among these swimmers is Jack Callan (11) with an enormous lead. He finishes the race by touching the wall, looks up and smiles realizing he is a state champion. Callan will be a state champion in 3 more events that day.

With his older brother Patrick graduated, the attention turned to Jack to run the show. Callan started swim when he was 10 years old. He swims on the swim team for the school, as well as Trident Aquatics Club. Jack works hard by practicing Monday-Saturday for about 2 hours a day. In his swimming career, he has made memories and friends that will last a lifetime, including a state championship. He and the team plan to do the same next swim season.

Callan took home 1st in four events at state including the: 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, and the 400 freestyle relay. Before Callan swims, he goes to the warm up pool to practice how he will swim in a race, talk to his coaches for tips and advice, and sometimes listens to some pump up music. What goes through his his head is simple: Doing what he has been trained to do, and try to surpass his goals.

Jack was very proud after realizing he had won state after they lost last year by two points. Things changed as the schools team won big this year.

“It was a special moment for us,” Callan said. “I’m so glad that we bounced back from last year and got the job done.”

Laney Sims (11) is a longtime friend of Callan. She is on both swim teams Jack is on. She is very proud of how he has grown as a swimmer and for his success in his swimming career.

“He is a hard worker,” Sims said. “It makes me happy that he has done so well as leader and as a swimmer during his career.”

His Dad and coach at Trident, Sean Callan is also very proud of his son. He has hopes that Jack can be able to take his swim career to college. He also supports his son’s dream of becoming a swim coach after college.

“Swimming in college has been a big dream of his,” Sean Callan said. “He is currently working and pursuing that dream, every time he gets in the pool.”

With Jack’s continuous hard work, he plans to continue to get better as well as getting back to back swim state championships.
