Lacing up his shoes, walking up to the start, ready for the gun to fire. Ryland Gray (11) shoots off the line jumping over hurdle after hurdle running faster than ever before. With each jump he ran faster and faster, the finish line was finally in sight, he set his eyes on the finish line and crossed the finish line with tremendous speed before anyone could get close to reaching him. This is how Ryland Gray set the school record for 300-meter hurdles.

Holding the school record for the 300-meter hurdles, his commitment to running is unwavering. Ryland competes in every track meet so he can try to further his abilities. He practices every school day either during fourth block or after school. Along with his training, he had a strong desire to break the record and that is what pushed him over the line.

“My drive to make it on the school leaderboard and Coach Collin’s intense training led me to break the record,” Gray said.

His teammates pushed him to work hard at every practice as they always push as hard as they can. They all are pushed to perform their best at every practice by Coach Collins. He is known to be quite ruthless, which is a good thing, in this case, training the hurdlers. Vivian Moon (9) thinks Coach Collins is who led Ryland to break the record.

“He wouldn’t have been able to break the record without the help of Coach Collins,” Moon said.

Coach Collins, although not particularly talkative, is still proud of how the hurdlers perform. When he found out that Ryland broke the record he was proud but immediately thought how there is still room to improve. Coach Collins believes Rylan breaking the record was a great achievement.

“It’s a great accomplishment for him obviously,” Collins said.

Ryland’s determination shows us how if you put your mind to something you can do it.
